The master’s thesis deals with the attitude to death and the space of death. I am focused on the hospice, the space where a person spends his last days of life. In my master’s thesis, I try to answer the question of what environment allows the dying person and their loved ones to reconcile calmly with the end of life. In my work, I deal with the expanding Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Tallinn Deaconess Hospital’s department of hospice care.

I have focused on three user groups – the dying person, caregivers and support staff and the relatives. I have looked at the three premortal stages and adapted the space to the changing needs of the dying person. I have approached design on three scales: the first on the dying scale, the second on the ward scale, and the third on the hospice department.
